Aligning Science with Sustainability

Tackling power-hungry servers to minimise online carbon footprint with 100% renewable energy

The Average Scientist

Founded in 2022, The Average Scientist (TAS) initially began as a blog but quickly advanced into a wider STEM resource website with a multitude of additional content.

Since then, they have developed TAS Talks, and now also provide content to schools and home educators to improve the quality of STEM education at both primary and secondary levels, as well as act in an ambassadorial role inspiring the next generation of scientists, mathematicians, technologists and engineers.

Client's issue & goal

TAS often present publicly on matters relating to sustainability as they hold an authoritative, scientific position on the evolution of Planet Earth and wider Earth Sciences.

It includes educating individuals and businesses on the effect human beings have on the carbon cycle and global temperature change and offers suggestions for both small individual actions and larger transformational approaches which will be necessary if our planet is to remain safe and liveable for ourselves and future generations.

This led TAS to closely examine their own activities regarding sustainability. It identified their biggest footprint was the usage of power-hungry servers to host their website content.

To align with their sustainability strategies and messaging, it was important to TAS that they made the switch to 100% renewable energy hosting to minimise their online carbon footprint. TAS also required hosting which would be able to handle increases in web traffic and be fully secure.

"We speak about sustainability often and now can proudly stand up and confess to be ‘eating our own dogfood’.  Working with We Are HA is very much a partnership. They care about their customers whilst also caring about our planet. That’s something we want to be involved with and a message we will continue to advocate for to others."

Our Solution

After some research, TAS found We Are HA and began to engage with us with a view to moving to our 100% renewable energy hosting.

Following a consultation, the team at HA fully understood what TAS required and we were able to recommend the best solutions to meet their needs. We then set everything up ready for a hassle-free migration to our sustainable hosting, including WAF for additional security and EDGE for high-performance web speed.

“During our consultation, Nick took the time to explain the manner in which some companies create environmental damage and then seek to mitigate that with activities such as tree planting, something that we know takes many years to actually positively affect the natural systems of Planet Earth to keep carbon levels under control. The most compelling aspect of their proposition was the fact that with 100% renewable energy sources powering our servers, we wouldn’t be causing that damage in the first place.”

Results & Benefit

“Our changeover to HA’s sustainable hosting couldn’t have been simpler. Expert technical advice and assistance at every step of the process gave us zero downtime for our website and a smooth transition.

We didn’t take a performance hit either, infact quite the opposite.  With the highly efficient caching technology on these servers our website is much faster than before and gives our visitors a world-class experience of the type that was previously only offered by the very largest organisations.

We have important education and messages to deliver and our platform now does that with the speed, accuracy and elegance we are so pedantic about developing in our outreach.”

TAS Talks on sustainability now feature We Are HA and our sustainable hosting solution as it really is something any business can adopt to reduce the damage they cause to the planet.

TAS said, “We speak about this topic often and now can proudly stand up and confess to be ‘eating our own dogfood’.

Working with We Are HA is very much a partnership. They care about their customers whilst also caring about our planet. That’s something we want to be involved with and a message we will continue to advocate for to others.”
